A Quarter for a Quarter

Bells at Grinton

The Swaledale Festival Quarter Peal at Grinton

In recent years Malcolm Creese has taken up bell-ringing and become quite good at it. As one of those quaint little touches that he likes to insert into the Swaledale Festival, this year on 9 June he provided an opportunity for the band at Grinton to ring its first quarter peal - a minimum of 1250 changes - since its two new bells were added.

To ring a quarter peal takes about 45 minutes and the Grinton band completed theirs as the audience arrived for the concert by the Urban Folk Quartet.

Successful peals and quarter peals are published in the official periodical for ringing, the magazine Ringing World, and its website where this Grinton quarter peal appeared thus:

25th birthday compliment to 1.

For the Urban Folk Quartet concert as part of the 2017 Swaledale Festival. Assistant Events Manager 1 & Artistic Director 8.

Peals and quarter peals are often a means of celebrating a special event, and on this occasion not only was it the first quarter peal on the 8 bells and a Swaledale Festival official event, it was also the 25th birthday of Chris Curry, our popular and very hard-working Assistant Events Manager.

Well done to all.
