Swaledale Festival has now finished for 2025. We will be back with a bang in 2026 from 23 May to 6 June. Save the dates and watch this space for further information... Thank you!
Church Street Middleham Leyburn DL8 4PQ
The church dates from the 13th century. The South doorway is original with a chamfered pointed arch and roll moulded jambs. Above the door is a 14th century relief of the Crucifixion flanked by our Lady and St. John, and said by Pevsner “to be clearly once very good”. It is reputed to come from the castle. A large tomb cover on the wall is that of Robert Thornton, 22nd Abbot of Jervaulx, who died in 1533. It is believed to have come from the Abbey to Middleham for protection at the time of the dissolution of the monasteries around 1536 - along with the Abbot's remains.
Parking There is no parking adjacent to the church, but a car park at the nearby Key Centre is a 175m walk away along a flat, tarmac path with some blue badge parking. Please be careful when parking within the village so as not to inconvenience local people.
Access The church has an entrance off Leyburn Road with eight steps. Wheelchair users can access the church, but to avoid these steps it is recommended to park in Park Lane and approach via the alley. We regret that there is no accessible toilet. A hearing loop is available. If you would like to discuss your requirements, please contact us.
Toilets Located inside the church.
Refreshments Tea, coffee and biscuits may be available.
